We’re into bars, so we naturally gravitate towards the stylish upstairs bar, where happy hour reigns long and happy for 5 nights of the week.

The cream coloured banquettes are alluring enough when you can commandeer one. But that can prove difficult as many nights of the week, the trendy young media and fashion types of Soho and its surrounding areas congregate here to get the party started and leave all their pretentions behind.

And why not? It looks fab, the drinks are good value and taste good too – and when you’ve downed enough to get in the party mood you can make your way down the stairs to the club and dance the night away!

Drink in some culture, then down some more drinks whilst taking in one of the most beautiful views in London…

Now there are some bars that are notable because their very altitude gives them commanding views over this great city. And then there are bars that are simply breathtaking because of what you are looking at.

The Tate Modern bar on the 7th floor of The Tate Modern Art Gallery falls firmly into the second category. Situated right on the Southbank of the Thames it would be great just to sit here (or stand, as it does get fairly busy) and watch the river. You could even admire the famous wobbly bridge – more correctly entitled the Millenium Footbridge – especially when it’s lit up at night.

But let’s face, the view is dominated by the majesty of St Paul’s Cathedral sitting atop Ludgate Hill on the opposite bank. And if that doesn’t stir something in you, then you probably haven’t had enough drinks yet.

Talking of drinks, what about them? To be frank, who cares? They are all perfectly serviceable… but have you seen the view? Want a snack…? Try some of the tasty tapas… but really… have you seen the view?

In the old days you invariably took your latest date to the cinema. It had many advantages for budding young couples. It was dark. It was relatively cheap. You didn’t have to talk too much.

You could show your sensitive side if you were a boy by choosing a chick flick and dabbing away the tears that showed how ‘in touch’ with your feelings you were. If you were a girl you could suffer through Rambo XV and pretend you enjoyed mass destruction.

It was also accepted that some canoodling might be going on towards the back. Many cinemas even had a bar so you could fortify yourself beforehand.

Now update that concept to a retro themed basement in cool and trendy Southwark. And, instead of a cinema with a bar, try a bar with a cinema. Throw in a great program of films, tasty food, a superb sound system, all the drinks and cocktails you could want, comfy sofas facing the screen with tables and chairs dotted around the perimeter and you’ve got a great venue for romance.

If you’re a member you can book a sofa in advance, if you’re not you can still get in, but arrive early or take pot-luck with where you get to sit. Films are shown Sunday to Wednesday. Turn up any other time and you’ll be in the middle of a music and dancing venue… which is better suited to a rave than a romance. And unless your date is a footy fan, check to make sure it’s not a football night when big matches are shown on the big screen.
